Its been almost five years since Cradle of Filth has toured the United States. The last attempt at a tour was cancelled due to visa related issues, but this time only the first four shows were cancelled and members of the British metal band were able to make their way through the US and Canada with support from Ne Obliviscaris and the Butcher Babies.
After the Philadelphia show was cancelled, I made my way into New York City to see the final stop of the tour at Webster Hall. While I have seen COF live many times, this was my first time seeing the supporting acts and was my first time at Webster Hall.
You can actually see me and Edyta (who was a great sport and survived another metal show) near the back right corner of the room standing near ‘Magic’ Mike at the COF merch table.
Webster Hall is located on East 11th Street between 3rd and 4th avenues. Its a decent area with plenty of parking a block or two away. While the building itself appeared old and rundown, the sound and lighting was top notch. All of the bands sounded absolutely amazing in this place. It was interesting to see so little security for a metal show, but we didn’t witness any fights or anyone getting hurt.
I only caught the end of the Austrialian death metal band, Ne Obliviscaris, but was able to see the entire Butcher Babies set. It was my first time seeing them live and was quite impressed with their sound and energy.
After a very good 45min set, it was finally time for Cradle of Filth. This was probably my fourth or fifth time seeing them and I feel like its probably their strongest lineup to date. The set list included a bunch of songs from their latest album, Hammer of the Witches, but also included plenty of great songs from past albums.
- Heaven Torn Asunder
- Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids
- Blackest Magic in Practice
- Lord Abortion
- Right Wing of the Garden Triptych
- Malice Through the Looking Glass
- Deflowering the Maidenhead, Displeasuring the Goddess
- Gilded C*nt
- Born in a Burial Gown
- Your Immortally…
- Nymphetamine (w/ all the bands on stage)
- Her Ghost in the Fog
- From the Cradle to Enslave
- The Principle of Evil Made Flesh
Overall it was an amazing show and hope that it doesn’t take them another five years to be allowed back into the country.
